The
Cinémathèque française screens a film by Sidney Olcott
(bis)

Web page from the Cinémathèque française website
announcing the screening of The Further Adventures of the Girl Spy.
I was a bit hasty when I wrote the previous post on this
blog: “Cinémathèque
française screens a Sidney Olcott film”. Because not
one, but two films by the Canadian director were shown on
the big screen of the venerable institution created by Henri
Langlois, along with Georges Franju and Jean Mitry, who we
tend to forget.
The Girl Spy Before Vicksburg
(1911), Thursday June 12, at 6:30 p.m. and then, the
following day at 8 p.m., The Further Adventures of
the Girl Spy (1910). These two strips recount
the adventures of Nan, an intrepid young woman, played by
Gene Gauntier, who is also the screenwriter of these
stories, whose particularity - and this is a first - is to
develop a Southern point of view. And this long before David
W. Griffith.
I expressed one regret: that the other two films in the
series - not yet called “Girl Spy” - were not included in
the “Nasty
Women, the shameless of cinema” program.
The Girl Spy: An incident of the Civil War (1910),
the first film in the series, is held at the Library and
Archives of Canada (Ottawa). It could have been part of the
program. It's just a way of clearing my conscience a little.

Kalem advertisements for films in The Girl Spy series,
published by the weekly trade magazine The Film Index in
1910 and 1911.
