Gene Gauntier in front of Mary's Well in Nazareth, 1912 As today.
Bethlehem , Egypt, Jerusalem… Kalem decided to produce a movie as close to the places described in the Gospels. It is normal for Sidney Olcott to rise in northern Palestine where Jesus spent most of His life. Nazareth, the town where His parents grew up in Egypt after returning from the massacre of the Innocents ; the Sea of Galilee where He recruits his first disciples and the country where he preached before travelling to Jerusalem for His Passion.
Alcott is accompanied by Gauntier, Henderson Bland, Clark, McGowan, Hollister, Vignola, Dyer, Thomas Lennox, Ainseley and Ameen the translator.
In 1912, the journey of El Kalem is a real adventure. This is to cross the rugged landscapes, deserts, mountains… without bodied roads frequented by populations deemed dangerous Bedouin bandits who provide troops of Lawrence of Arabia…
The path taken by El Kalem through Nablus (Nablus), Jenin , Nazareth and Tiberias. Today, it passes through the West Bank as regards the first two steps. The convoy includes three horses and two carts pulled by donkeys… In total the journey of 240 miles (387 km) lasted five days.
In Nazareth, Mary's Well is still there. But since 1912 many buildings pushed around.
The area around the Sea of Galilee are probably dirtier than our good time Olcott, bottles, plastic bags litter the banks days. It is difficult to find the exact spot where Hollister placed his camera to shoot the meeting with the apostles.
The shores of Lake Tiberias are now well dirty.
